Papua New Guinea - Our Organic Coffee Bean Source
Papua New Guinea is located in the Pacific region
just north of Australia and comprises of 600 islands situated just
below the equator. Papua New Guinea is an island of spectacular scenery
and culture. Papua New Guinea maintained its numerous diverse cultures
as inter marriage between tribes were not generally encouraged culturally,
resulting in a Country with more than 700 languages spoken, accounting
for more than half the world's total languages spoken today.
Papua New Guinea is counted as having some of the last tropical rain
forests in the world. This is the last frontier as some areas have
yet to be discovered. Some tribes have never seen outsiders, due to
the high mountains and the hostile terrain. A tribe will not wander
into another tribe's territory for fear of inciting tribal warfare,
which is still commonly fought with bow and arrows. Because of its
tropical location and its diverse topography, Papua New Guinea is
home to unique plant and animal species found no where else on Earth.
Nestled in amongst all of this, in the mountains that run down the
spine of the island, live many thousands of village farmers whose
lifeblood is coffee growing.
Organic coffee production
Coffee is the number one cash crop in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.
The central Highlands, with its high altitude and cooler climate is
ideal for the cultivation of high quality Arabica Coffee. 70% of the
population are still dependent on subsistence agriculture with small
plots of Coffee trees, where chemicals, synthetic fertilizers and
pesticides are unheard of.
